Clamming
Clamming at Lawson's Landing can be done whenever there is a tide that is 0.5 or lower. However 0.5 is the highest tide that the clam beds will uncover and therefore it must be calm (no wind or heavy surf) in order for you to be able to dig. Tides that are listed on the calendar are there because it is possible to dig but conditions is some cases may make that impossible. Also many tides are late enough in the day and marginal under ideal conditions but to late to have adequate time to really get your clams before the sun sets.
You need to have in your possession a valid California Saltwater fishing license that must be worn and visible above the waist. As for gear you should have a regular garden type shovel, tube or pipe, a bucket or sack, and rubber boots or shoes you can wash or toss in the garbage. Wear old cloths or a rain suit as you will get wet and sandy (black mucky sand).
A Message from the Lawson's
One of the many interests that bring many to our area are the Giant Clams that can be dug during the low tides of the spring and fall. We'd like all of our customers to be aware of conservation practices we have in place so that we can assure that our future generations can dig clams on Tomales Bay.
When you visit please make yourself aware of the rules and regulations that pertain to this area. Tomales Point is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore and has information posted with special rules regarding use of the Seashore.
Please note that the "CLAM CLIPPER" has been sold and will never run again. There has been an improvement in the clam population over the last few years, but if we want to ensure that we have clams in the future, we have to continue the measures that were introduced a few years ago.
The use of our rental boats to ferry large groups to the clam beds is limited to a maximum of two trips. This restriction is in place for safety reasons as well as to reduce impacts on the clam population.
